- A dental implant is a titanium post placed into the jawbone that replaces the root of a missing tooth, not just the visible crown.
- Unlike bridges or dentures, implants preserve the jawbone and don't require filing down adjacent teeth.
- Treatment at DentAkademi involves two visits to Istanbul, typically 3 months apart — implant placement on the first, crown fitting on the second.
- The osseointegration period (bone bonding) takes approximately 2–3 months and happens at home, not in Istanbul.
- Suitability depends on bone volume, general health, and a few other clinical factors — all assessed with a free CBCT review before any commitment is made.
ما هي زراعة الأسنان؟
When a tooth is lost, the bone underneath it begins to shrink — slowly, but consistently. A dental implant is the only tooth replacement that actually stops that process, because it sits inside the jawbone and stimulates it the same way a natural root does.
Structurally, a dental implant has three components:
- دعامة الزرعة — a small titanium screw placed into the jawbone, functioning as the tooth root
- الدعامة الوسيطة — the connector piece between the post and the visible crown
- تاج الأسنان — the custom-made visible portion, shaped and shaded to match your existing teeth
Titanium is used because it bonds directly with bone — a process called osseointegration — without triggering rejection. This is not a new material or an experimental technique; titanium implants have been used in dentistry since the 1960s and are among the most thoroughly studied restorations in all of medicine.
Implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth in a row, or an entire arch (upper or lower jaw). They can also serve as anchors for implant-supported dentures, eliminating the need for adhesives or nightly removal. Which approach is appropriate depends on how many teeth are missing, the condition of your jawbone, and your broader treatment goals — all of which are assessed before any plan is confirmed.
Are You a Suitable Candidate?
Most adults in reasonable general health can have dental implants. The key variables are bone volume, gum health, and a few systemic factors.
✅ Generally suitable
- صحة عامة جيدة
- Adequate bone volume at the site
- Controlled or no systemic conditions
- Non-smoker or ex-smoker
- Healthy gum tissue
⚠️ Needs assessment / ❌ Alternative approach
- Active smoker
- Severe, uncontrolled diabetes
- Osteoporosis or low bone density
- Active gum (periodontal) disease — treat first
- Blood-thinning medication
- Insufficient bone without grafting option
- Recent radiotherapy to the jaw
- Diabetes (well-controlled may be suitable)
If you fall into the middle column, that doesn't mean implants aren't possible — it simply means your jaw structure may need preliminary work or a specialised surgical approach before placement can safely occur.

Upload X-Ray Now"One of the most common things I hear from new patients is: 'My dentist back home told me I don't have enough bone for implants.' In many of those cases, that's true for a standard implant placed without preparation. But it isn't the end of the road.
When bone height in the upper jaw is compromised due to proximity to the maxillary sinus cavity, a straightforward sinus lift can safely create the vertical depth needed for standard implant placement.
What I tell every patient is this: I won't place an implant if I don't think it will succeed long-term. That sometimes means recommending a preliminary procedure or waiting until conditions are right."
Why Do Patients Choose Istanbul for Dental Implants?
Istanbul has become one of the most established destinations for dental implant treatment among international patients — not because of a single factor, but because of several that align at once.
Lower treatment costs without reduced clinical standards
The cost difference between Turkey, Istanbul and Western Europe isn't explained by shortcuts. It reflects lower operational overheads, different salary structures, and government support for health tourism. The clinical protocols, materials, and implant systems are the same — or in many cases, identical brands to those used in UK and German clinics.
Modern diagnostic and surgical infrastructure
At DentAkademi, all implant cases begin with a 3D cone beam CT scan (CBCT). This lets us see your bone volume in three dimensions before a single incision is made — and plan placement digitally before surgery begins. Most of our cases use guided surgery, meaning the implant position is mapped in advance.
Internationally experienced surgical teams
Working with international patients is not a sideline at this clinic — it's the core of what we do. Our coordinators speak English, our documentation is bilingual, and our aftercare protocols are designed for patients who will be returning home between visits.
Practical travel logistics
Istanbul is served by direct flights from most major UK, European, and Middle Eastern cities. Treatment at DentAkademi typically requires two visits, each lasting 4–6 days. Many patients use the recovery time to explore Istanbul — the city is well set up for it.
That said, travelling for dental treatment involves real considerations: what happens if a complication arises after you're home, who monitors your implant between visits, and how follow-up is handled. We address all of these before treatment begins — not after.
The Dental Implant Procedure: Step by Step
Dental implant treatment follows a predictable sequence, though the exact timeline varies depending on individual factors such as bone density, healing rate, and whether preparatory procedures are needed.
الاستشارة الأولية والتصوير ثلاثي الأبعاد
Your first appointment includes a full clinical examination and a CBCT scan. This scan shows us the three-dimensional structure of your jawbone — its height, width, and density at each potential implant site — along with the positions of nerves, sinuses, and adjacent roots.
This imaging is what makes accurate, safe placement possible. Without it, implant planning is approximate. With it, we know exactly where each implant will go before surgery begins.
We also take a detailed medical and detailed jaw profile. In patients with localized bone loss, a pre-surgical bone grafting treatment helps build the necessary jaw volume for strong primary stability.
Treatment Plan
Based on the scan and your clinical profile, we put together a written treatment plan outlining: proposed implant positions and number of implants, any preparatory procedures needed, the expected timeline from first to final appointment, costs, and the implant system recommended for your case.
You receive this plan in writing. No next steps happen until you've read it, asked your questions, and decided you want to proceed.
جراحة وضع الزرعة
The implant is placed under local anaesthesia. The procedure itself typically takes 1–2 hours for a single implant, longer for multiple placements.
Most patients are surprised by how manageable it is. The anaesthesia is effective, and what you feel during the procedure is primarily pressure — not pain. For patients with significant dental anxiety, or those having multiple implants placed in a single session, IV sedation is available. Under sedation, you remain conscious but deeply relaxed, and most patients remember very little of the procedure.
After surgery, some swelling and mild discomfort over the following 2–3 days is normal. We provide written post-operative instructions and remain reachable by WhatsApp during your recovery period.
Healing and Osseointegration
Once the implant is placed, you go home. Over the following 2–3 months, the titanium post fuses with the surrounding bone — a process that happens on its own, without further intervention. You don't need to be in Istanbul for this stage.
During healing, we recommend:
- Soft diet for the first 2 weeks around the surgical site
- Careful oral hygiene — keeping the area clean is important; avoiding it is not
- No smoking — nicotine impairs blood supply to healing tissue and significantly raises the risk of implant failure
- Attending any scheduled check-ups with your local dentist if arranged
A temporary restoration may be placed during this period, depending on the location of the implant and your clinical situation.
Crown Fitting (Second Visit)
Once osseointegration is confirmed, you return to Istanbul for your second visit. We take impressions or digital scans of the implant and surrounding teeth, and the permanent crown is fabricated to match the shape, size, and shade of your natural dentition.
The crown is attached via the abutment and adjusted for bite. This appointment is typically completed within 2–3 days.
Your Istanbul Treatment Timeline
Most of our international implant patients structure their two visits like this:
First Visit (approx. 5–6 days)
| Day | ما الذي يحدث |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrival in Istanbul — VIP airport transfer to hotel |
| Day 2 | CBCT scan + consultation + written treatment plan |
| Day 3 | Implant placement surgery |
| Day 4 | Rest + post-operative check |
| Day 5 | Review appointment, any adjustments, post-op instructions for home |
| Day 6 | Return flight home |
Osseointegration. You continue normal life, follow the dietary and hygiene guidance, and attend any local dental monitoring appointments if arranged.
Second Visit (approx. 3–4 days)
| Day | ما الذي يحدث |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrival + integration check |
| Day 2 | Crown fitting and bite adjustment |
| Day 3 | Final review + photographs |
| Day 4 | Return flight home |
After you're home: Ongoing monitoring — annual check-ups with your local dentist are sufficient for most implant cases. We provide full written records and X-rays from both visits.
Dental Implant vs. Bridge vs. Denture
If you're missing one or more teeth, implants are one of three main options. Here's how they compare:
| المعيار | زراعة الأسنان | Fixed Bridge | طقم أسنان متحرك |
|---|---|---|---|
| الحفاظ على العظام | ✅ Yes — stimulates the jaw | ❌ No — bone gradually resorbs | لا |
| تأثر الأسنان المجاورة | ✅ None | ❌ Neighbouring teeth filed down | ✅ None |
| يشعر وكأنه سن طبيعي | ✅ Most similar | ⚠️ Close, but fixed to adjacent teeth | ❌ Different |
| Lifespan (with normal care) | أكثر من 20 عاماً | من 10 إلى 15 عامًا | 5–8 years |
| التنظيف | Brush and floss normally | Special floss required under bridge | Remove nightly |
| Long-term cost | Lower over time | متوسط | Higher (replacements) |
| Suitable if adjacent teeth are healthy | نعم | ⚠️ Requires filing healthy teeth | نعم |
For most patients who are clinically suitable, an implant is the closest thing to replacing the tooth itself — not just the visible crown. The higher upfront cost is generally offset by the longer lifespan and the absence of bone loss over time.
For patients who are not suitable for implants — or who are not ready for the procedure — a bridge remains a well-established and functional option. We will always tell you honestly which approach is appropriate for your situation.
"For severe upper jaw bone loss where bone grafting isn't viable, specialized solutions like zygomatic implants anchor directly into the dense cheekbone, bypassing jawbone limitations entirely and avoiding complex bone reconstruction."
— Assoc. Prof. Burak Cezairli
Implant Systems: What We Use and Why
Dental implants are manufactured by a range of companies. The system chosen for a given patient depends on the anatomy of the case, bone quality, and the surgical approach — not on cost or availability.
At DentAkademi, we work with a range of established implant systems with documented long-term clinical records:
- Straumann — BLX Selective, Selective, and Classic lines
- Nobel Biocare
- BEGO
- Notch
- Osstem
Before treatment begins, your treatment plan will specify which system has been recommended for your case and why. If you have a preference — or if you've done research and have questions about a specific brand — those conversations happen at the consultation stage, not after the fact.
Patients are encouraged to ask: which implant will be used, what the evidence says about its performance at 10 and 15 years, and whether the recommended system is appropriate for their specific bone type.

How many visits are required?
Standard single implant treatment requires a minimum of two visits to Istanbul, separated by approximately 10–14 weeks. Complex cases requiring preliminary jaw procedures or multiple implants may need an additional visit. This will be clear in your treatment plan before you commit.
What if a complication arises after I'm home?
This is one of the most important questions to ask any dental tourism clinic — and the honest answer is: most minor post-operative issues (swelling, mild discomfort, minor gum irritation) can be managed remotely with guidance from our team. For anything requiring physical assessment, we work with patients to arrange prompt review — either in Istanbul or, where possible, through referral to a trusted local dentist. Serious complications requiring urgent treatment can happen with any surgical procedure, anywhere — our obligation is to respond quickly and take clinical responsibility.
How is follow-up handled when I'm back home?
We provide all patients with complete written documentation: treatment records, X-rays, implant specifications, and aftercare instructions. We recommend annual check-ups with your regular dentist for monitoring. If your dentist has questions about your implant, our clinical team is reachable directly.
Will I have a contact person throughout?
Yes. Every international patient is assigned a coordinator who handles communication from initial enquiry through to aftercare. Your coordinator speaks English, is available by WhatsApp, and is your single point of contact — you won't be passed between departments.
النقل من وإلى المطار والإقامة
We arrange VIP airport transfers and can recommend partner hotels near the clinic. These are conveniences, not selling points — what matters is the clinical outcome, and we'd rather you choose us on that basis.
الأسئلة الشائعة
الخلاصة
A dental implant is the most complete way to replace a missing tooth — not because it looks natural, but because it replaces the root and maintains the jawbone.
Istanbul, and DentAkademi specifically, is a practical choice for this treatment if you're weighing cost, quality, and logistics together. The clinical standards, implant systems, and diagnostic technology are comparable to what you'd find in a well-equipped UK or German clinic. The difference is the cost — and the fact that treatment is completed in two defined visits, with the healing period spent at home.
We don't think implants are right for every patient, and we'll tell you so if that applies to your case. What we aim to give every patient is an accurate clinical assessment, a written plan, and enough information to make a decision that's right for them — not one that's right for us.
